I see the American dream as an individually determined thing. Some people see it as wanting to get more and be more than they were in the past. Some see it as finding a place to settle where they can live with freedom to choose their future. Others see it as some pie in the sky that they will never get to and they’ll always be discontented and unhappy. The paradigm is different for each person. But what we all desire is the assurance that our needs will be met: basic needs like clean water, nutritious food, a place to live in safety, adequate clothing, health care, education and reliable transportation. Then we can work on building relationships that support each other within our communities and across the globe.
I want to avoid a future in which people stop listening to each other. I want a future where everyone does their part to better society and helps their neighbor, honoring diversity rather than devaluing it. I know I sound Polyannaish, but that is my dream.
